Public education is at a crossroads. The challenges we face require a commitment to independent leadership. As the only school board member with children attending our schools, I am honored to be supported by leaders from every one of our cities & schools as I work to ensure our community's priorities guide us forward.
For the past 9 years I have worked to ensure our students have access to exceptional schools. From helping lead our District to develop a new technology plan that has made LVUSD a model in the national for the integration of technology in the classroom to supporting smaller class sizes and leading our district as Board President after Parkland to invest millions in student safety, I have fought to give parents a voice in our schools and and I will never waiver in my commitment to always putting the needs of our students first.
Our kids are facing a generational challenge today. The closures forced by COVID and extended by poor policies from County leaders have had a devastating impact on student learning and on emotional health. Every parent in our community has felt it. My #1 focus in the years ahead is to close the achievement gap that widened into a chasm for our at risk students during COVID and invest every resource available into supporting our students who are struggling with the long term emotional and social damage from COVID. I am proud that we have dramatically expanded our counseling services and have targeted significant resources to addressing the achievement gap. But more can be done. We can, and we must do more to ensure every student has the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential.
As the school board member with the longest track record of service on our District's Finance Committee, I have made ensuring a strong budget and proper stewardship of tax payer dollars a key priority since my first day in office. I am proud of our efforts identifying millions of dollars in grant funding, adopting innovative ways to drive additional dollars into the classroom and our focus on saving tax payers millions of dollars in property taxes. As Sacramento continues to play games with local control of school funding, I will continue to advocate for our community and work to change the funding formula that disproportionately harms high performing districts like LVUSD.
